GILLIAN JENKINS - " Shape Shifting in the Snow"

Artists statement.

Title: Shape Shifting in the Snow. 2022.

Gillian has created her latest piece specifically for Two Doors Up gallery.

She started by glueing butcher’s bags to the canvas and then drawing in the Deer. Using a paint scraper and a sander removed some of the surface to achieve a patina effect. She then glued beautiful quality Stonehenge paper in warm and cool whites to suggest a blobby heavy snow fall. She then drew the Deer across the 3 different surfaces. 

The affect offers the viewer a visually disorientating sensation. While the physical power of the Deer is evident there is a shapeshifting quality suggesting the spirit of the Deer. There is a swirl to the composition emphasising the movement of the ‘snow’ and the spaces between the ‘snow’.

Hence the title of the work, ‘Shape Shifting in the Snow’.
